The Gift

So, I decided to make my little girl her own backpack for her birthday. I wanted her to have something to take with us to the park, play dates, grandma days and, when mommy is ready to send her little bird off into the world, school. I have loved the backpacks from Made By Rae, so I bought the pattern. It wasn't too bad to make, and if you have an actual zipper foot, it would be cake! Yeah, I don't have one. So the zipper took me forever because my sewing machine didn't like the fabric. But other than that, it came together really fast and was a fun project.
I added the ruffle to "Girl-ify" it.

Now, I need some advice. As I have said before, my sewing machine is older than I am. And in sewing machine years, she is a senior citizen. And not just a senior citizen, she has started acting like an old hag! The crazy bag lady that curses at small children... yup, that's my machine. So my husband and I are looking into getting me a new machine, but we are getting conflicting information. I have been hearing some great things about Brother machines. Do any of you have one? Or if you have had one and it didn't work well for you, what was your plan b? I'm not in a position for a Bernina (which would be my Cadillac of machines and I would love to have one, but it's not in the budget.) Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

  1. I have a huskavarna viking and love it. It was like a $400 ish machine but is a work horse. I teach some sewing classes and the only bad things I have heard about are about singers. Several friends have brothers and love them. I didn't want something so computer like for myself.

  2. I have a Brother, and LOVE it! I got mine through Costco. Their return policy is great, so I was comfortable knowing it would be easy to return if it wasn't everything I wanted.

  3. My first two machines were Brother machines...one inherited from my mother, and who knows how old or how overworked it was! Then one day my MIL said "oh yeah, I have a brand new brother that has been sitting in my closet for over five years now, never used" and they were both workhorses!! I love them...I have recently received a brand new Singer from my Aunt who said I needed a "respectable machine" not Mom's old run-down one LOL....but I still use both my Brother's on occassion, esp with sewing through thick layers of fabric....they sew like a dream!!! And very affordable!

  6. I absolutely love the backpack! what a great idea. I hope she loves it as much as I do. You are amazing! My little SINGER works great ($150-175). They have a variety of models, but definitely more affordable than a Bernina. Love Ya!

  8. Love the backpack, great job. Clicked on your link from TT&Jello. I have had my $99 Brother machine for over 13 years and it has been good to me! It is not fancy and I am no seamstress but I have done large and small projects over the years. I am ready for an upgrade myself.
